Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that treats small varicose veins and spider veins. It involves injecting a solution called a sclerosant agent directly into the affected vein, which causes the vein to collapse and is then absorbed by the body, redirecting to deeper healthier veins. Recommended for small varicose veins and spider veins, once treated, veins tend to fade within a few weeks to a month, although they might not disappear completely and may require 3-4 treatments to obtain best results. The whole procedure takes just minutes and is generally very well tolerated without pretreatment or anesthesia.
Sclerotherapy is generally safe and has few serious complications. However, side effects that can occur where the needle goes into the skin include bruising, raised red areas, small skin sores, darkened skin, and a number of tiny red blood vessels. These side effects usually go away within days to weeks.
You may be asked to arrive 60 minutes prior to your treatment so that a topical numbing agent can be applied to the treatment area.
Once the area is numb, the provider will begin treating the desired veins. This takes roughly 15-30 minutes depending on the area being treated.
The solution, usually a liquid, works by irritating the lining of the vein, causing it to swell shut and block the flow of blood.
Some people feel minor stinging or cramping when the needle goes into the vein but this is described as mild and resolves quickly.
After removing the needle, pressure is applied to the area and it is massaged it to keep blood out of the vein and to spread the solution.
On average, you may need a total of 4 treatments to completely treat the targeted veins.
Sometimes follow-up or maintenance, treatments are required.
Results can be seen soon after the first treatment.
It is important to follow all aftercare instructions and to wear compression stockings for 7-10 days post treatment to reduce the risk of blood clots and for the best possible results.
